Kent Valley Not Flooded Yet
Kent Valley Not Flooded Yet
April 16, 2010Well, it's mid April, and the Kent valley hasn't flooded yet. They've been working hard on the Howard-Hansen dam to make sure it doesn't. Hopefully it won't flood. But in the mean time, they have scared a lot of people. This sort of panic has economic consequences. People who own rental properties in the valley are having a hard time renting out their properties. Still, it's good to have disaster relief efforts in place, and evacuation routes ready on the roads, just in case.
I guess that a flood might still happen. There are several more years before the dam will be really up to snuff. We could have an extra rainy winter one of those years. (It hasn't helped that there was no snow this year, and all the precipitation fell as rain. Snow melts slowly, giving the ground more time to soak up the moisture. This helps prevent flooding.)
But it doesn't look like a flood is going to happen this year. I am blessed, in any event, to live on a hill. But I might still have to evacuate if power or water is cut off. Maybe I was sent to this town to help with disaster relief. Maybe not, if there's no disaster. Time will tell.
